Frost Gold begins as nearly colourless glass with the faint aquamarine cast that clear glass takes on when it is thick. While it is still soft, the surface is drawn into raised, branching lines — closer to frost on a window than to anything cut by a machine.
Then comes the moment the piece is named for: gold-coloured metal is laid into the hot glass and closed over, so it sits inside the wall rather than on it. Light passing through the column catches it from every side. No two pieces carry the seam in the same place.
